Where plants meet humans

The idea of creating this virtual space came to me as an incredible opportunity to explore the fascinating intersection between plants and humans and fill the gap in accessible knowledge that exists today. Here, we embark on a journey through the world of economic botany, examining how plants have shaped our cultures, economies, and daily lives in profound and often unexpected ways.

Throughout history, plants have been our silent partners—sources of food, medicine, shelter, and inspiration. Yet, their stories are often overlooked in the rush of modern life. This blog aims to illuminate the complex and interconnected relationships we share with the natural world, offering insights into the ways plants have influenced human innovation, survival, and well-being.

From the ancient cultivation of staple crops to the cutting-edge biotechnologies of today, The Economic Botanist weaves together the scientific, historical, and cultural narratives that reveal the rich tapestry of our interactions with plants.

Whether it's the healing powers of herbs, the role of plants in sustainable economies, or the forgotten stories of plant-based traditions, this blog seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the vital role plants play in shaping our world.

Join me in celebrating the remarkable versatility of the botanical kingdom, as we explore the beauty, wisdom, and untold potential that lies within the green world around us.

A little about me...

I am an agrologist storyteller and book author with over 25 years of experience studying agriculture, agri-food and the environment. My interests are on the relationship between plants and human economic activities, particularly the use of plants for food, medicine, textiles, fuel, and other practical purposes. Sometimes I even delve into plant philosophy for fun.

This whole body of knowledge is very important for understanding how plants contribute to human societies, economies, and cultures. I particularly love transforming complex information from the latest scientific studies into articles that are easily digestible so that everyone can have access to knowledge and enjoy the many benefits of learning from the non-human world.

My goal is to help people unlock the secrets of plants, their uses, and the stories they tell to develop a deeper, more meaningful connection with nature.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Sao Paulo, a Master of Science in Nutrition from the University of Saskatchewan where I studied consumer behaviorism, and extensive work experience, training and coursework in agricultural economics, agricultural policy, botany, food science, healthy foods, public health nutrition, and ethnobotany, both at undergraduate and graduate levels.
